Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest Mermaid Magic Once there was a mermaid named Marie. She had long green hair, turquoise eyes and a beautiful green tail covered with shiny scales.
Each night at sunset, Marie would leave the sea to meet her human friend named Emmalia by the beach. They would sing and play under the moon for hours. They were best friends. Emmalia often wished to become a mermaid too.
For years they played together. One summer evening, Marie waited but Emmalia did not come. As the moon began to go down, Marie sadly went back to the sea.
For many nights the lights in Emmalia's room were on but Emmalia never came. Marie was very sad.
After months of waiting Emmalia finally came, but this time was different. Emmalia's face was pale and her hair was gone. Emmalia explained that she was very sick with cancer and was going to die.
Marie did not understand because mermaids never die. Then she got an idea. Marie offered to use her mermaid magic to make Emmalia's dream come true. She sang a special song and turned Emmalia into a beautiful mermaid just like herself.
They swam off to sea and lived as mermaid friends forever.
