![]() My name is Catherine and I have two great aunts named Bessie and Louie. They are very old and look like twins. They live at Green Lake in an old house filled with old stuff. My great aunt Bessie is the cook, knitter and gardener. My great aunt Louie is the one who always plays with the kids. She fishes, ice skates and watches fireworks on the dock with us. About two years ago I went to the lake for a picnic. My great aunt Louie couldn't remember where the fork drawer was. This was puzzling because she's lived in the same house for 85 years and the forks have always been in the same place.
A year ago I went to the lake for a birthday party and noticed Louie kept asking me the same questions over and over again. A little later I went to the lake for cousin's party and great aunt Louie couldn't even remember my name. She didn't know who I was.
Not long Louie went to have lunch with a friend and could not find her way home. Family had to call the police to look for her. She was found safe about 10 hours later, still driving in circles.
Louie doesn't live at the house at Green Lake anymore. She lives in a nursing home down the road where the doors are locked so she can't get lost. Louie has Alzheimer's.
I went to the library and looked on the internet to learn more about Alzheimer's. This disease causes people to forget things they've known for a long time. Eventually, they can't even remember who they are.
One of the best ways to help people with Alzheimer's is to visit them a lot and to help them keep their brain busy. I'm going to visit Louie next week at the nursing home. We are going to decorate hand-blown Easter eggs with pictures of Green Lake memories and hang them on a tree in her room. This will help her remember the great times we've shared at Green Lake
