Cliff Russell
Cliff RussellCliff Russell has worked in Detroit-area media for nearly 30 years. His skills as a radio broadcaster have taken Russell to some of the most popular local stations, including WJR, WDET, WJZZ, WCXI, CKLW, WWJ, WCHB, WQBH and WDTR. Russell has won numerous local, state and national awards for his news and feature reporting.
While at WWJ, Russell entered the world of sports broadcasting, serving as color analyst for the station's University of Michigan Basketball games during the famed "Fab Five" era. His television work includes news reporting and serving as host of "Detroit Black Journal" on WTVS, as well as making regular appearances on several local news programs.
Russell became Detroit's first African-American Press Secretary to the Mayor when he was asked to serve in that position by Mayor Dennis W. Archer. Cliff Russell has been a full-time lecturer at Wayne State University and was a weekly columnist for the Detroit Free Press. He served as General Manager of WDTR - 90.9 FM and was a media specialist and a spokesperson for the Detroit Public Schools. Russell has held down anchor shifts on WWJ Newsradio 950 and served as a show host and play-by-play sports broadcaster on WQBH - AM 1400.
In December 2002, Cliff Russell was named Senior Director of Communications for the Detroit Tigers, the first African-American to hold the position in Major League Baseball history. Currently, Russell hosts American Black Journal on WTVS and is president and CEO of the Cliff Russell Media Group.
Cliff Russell was a two-time all state basketball player at the Roeper School before attending the University of Texas at El Paso on athletic scholarship and playing for Hall of Fame Coach Don Haskins. Russell later transferred and starred at Wayne State University under Head Basketball Coach Vern Payne.
A native of Detroit, Russell graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communications. He is the father of six children, three boys and three girls.
