The 11th Annual Sphinx Competition Concert
The Sphinx Competition was created to help African American and Latino classical string musicians get better opportunities to play and work for Symphony Orchestra where they are both underrepresented minorities. The competition is one week long with a Senior Division (18+) and a Junior Division (under 18). Our concert is the culmination of this competition. The three Senior Division finalists each play two pieces accompanied by the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, composed of Latino and African American players. Our program also features performances by the Junior Division Laureate and a performance by the Harlem Quartet (a group made up of former Sphinx Laureates). This year we will also include short biographical segments on each of the finalists. The climax of the program is the announcement of the Senior Division Laureate.
