Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love) stars as Martin Luther, the 16th century priest who led the Christian Reformation and whose defiant actions changed the world.

Filmed on 100 sets in 20 locations throughout Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic, Luther begins with a young man's vow to be come a monk and continues through his struggles to reconcile his desire for sanctification with his increasing abhorrence of the corruption and hypocrisy pervading the Church's hierarchy. Ultimately he is charged with heresy and must confront the ruling cardinals and princes who wield a fast, firm, and merciless grip on 16th century Germany.
