Intisar Markus
Intisar Markus followed her family out of Iraq during the Iran/Iraq conflict. Intisar's father would have been drafted into the army if they had stayed. She now enjoys greater freedom as a woman in America and she feels safer in the states. Intisar misses the family get-togethers that were frequent in Iraq. They have trouble finding the time to see each other here because the men spend more time working. She also misses the more social nature of Iraqi society where even neighbors in Iraq tend to help each other out. She cooks the same foods here as she did in Iraq and says everything concerning food is done exactly the same way in America. Intisar believes that people immigrate to the United States because they can ensure their families are happy and safe here.
