NAS-Track Racing: Madison Bike Races
105: Race Five
Saturday, 7/31 By: Tim Rimer (7/26/04) Team Purple claimed first place Friday after an evening of extremely
close competition in Rochester's Velodrome at Bloomer Park.
With one more night of racing to go, the racers again demonstrated their
competitive spirit and determination as Steve Mlujeak of Rochester Hills
and Ray Dybowski of Waterford nabbed first place by a single point.
In the final sprint of the 100 Lap Madison, which awards 25 points for
first place, the top four teams were all fiercely competing for the number
one position. Mlujeak and Dybowski lead with 58 points, only ten more
than Tony Bruley and Luke Cavendar of Team Orange in fourth place, and
only four points more than Team Neon's Dave Koesel and Andre Champoux
in second.
The final results were so close that there was some confusion after
the 100 Lap Madison when Bruley, Rochester Hills, and Cavendar, Troy,
were mistakenly declared the winners. Team Orange did take first place
in the final sprint, but came up one point shy of Team Purple, who took
third in the final sprint and first overall.
The overall point standings, which will decide the top NAS-Track racer
in next week's championship race, reflect how close the races have been
in the last few weeks. Champoux of Ypsilanti has the most points with
334, but very close behind is Toledo's Pio Apostoli with 331. Less than
twenty points behind Champoux are veteran racers Koesel and Bruley.
