NAS-Track Racing: Madison Bike Races
103: Race Three
Saturday, 7/17
By: Tim Rimer (7/13/04)
Team Blue outlasted the competition Friday, gathering 81 points and claiming first place in the third race of the NAS-Track season.
Pio Apostili of Toledo and Taylor Martin of Hamilton, Ontario, used a combination of well-timed strategy and impressive endurance to amass a commanding 13 points more than Ronnie Sink, Rochester, and Jim Houston, Lake Orion, of second place Team Pink.
Apostili and Martin let the other racers set the pace during the 100 Lap Madison, hanging on to a second or third place position. On the middle and end laps when points were on the line, however, Martin showed his competitive acceleration and speed by sprinting ahead of the pack.
The first place finish also gave Apostili the lead position in the overall rider standings with 215 points after three races. He may not hold on to the position for long, though. Not far behind is Ronnie Sink with 203 and Andre Champoux of Ypsilanti with 193.
The crowd of 500 that gathered at the Velodrome also witnessed NAS-Track's first female racer. Julia Bradley of Toronto rode with Dave Koesel, Livonia, as Team Neon. They made a strong showing, holding front positions on several laps of the 50 and 100 Lap Madison races, but ended the evening with only 31 points.
