Matters of Race. Essays
The Definition of Race -Sara
Race.
How is it defined?
Definition One:
Local geographic or global...human...population distinguished as a...more-or-less...distinct group by genetically transmitted physical...characteristics.
Tell that to the Haters. "It's just a matter of genetically transmitted physical characteristics, don't you see?"
Definition Two:
People united...on the basis of common history.
Not people united by being blackorwhiteoryelloworpurple
People united on the basis of common history. The history of mankind?
Definition Three:
Humans considered as a...group.
Humans - not blacksorwhitesoryellowsorpurples - but Humans as a group.
Definition Four:
A competition in which...participants...struggle like runners to be the winner.
Winner? Of what? Life?
The struggle of the races in the race of life.
Definition Five:
Steady or rapid...onward movement.
So.
Race is the steady movement of the human population united by a common history,
All struggling to win Life.
Maybe the dictionaries are right.
And maybe it's the readers of the dictionaries who are wrong.
Race cannot be defined.
