Matters of Race. Essays
Pioneer high school is a mosaic of every race you can think of. According to Junior John Ryan it is just that. "Yes, I believe we are a very diverse school. When asked if there are any conflicts between students of opposite race he simply shrugged and said he hadn't noticed a lot of conflicts. "For the most part everyone gets along. One of my best friends is Muslim and my ex-girlfriend is Chinese."
One of the schools most valued traditions is annual diversity week. The schools cultural clubs bring in foods unique to their culture in addition to Assembly's held all week such as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assembly Unfortunately there was not a diversity week held this past school year because of law suits against the school board due to events that took place at the last diversity week. The short version is this. The Pioneers for Christ group at the school is suing the school board claiming they didn't get an equal voice in the discussions concerning race, religion, values and topics of that sort held during diversity week. " When they found out that the gay straight alliance signed up to participate in the discussion they got upset and decided that they wanted to participate too, but the deadline had already passed. So they started jumping up and down mad and the board was tired of dealing with them so they let them participate. basically the pioneers for Christ didn't like what the gay straight alliances was saying." Said John Ryan describing the situation.
