Matters of Race: A look at one perspective
By Darnell
Roger is a normal high school student from Southfield (Lathrup). Things run pretty smoothly at his high school. All the students get along with one another. However, the real question is "do the students at Southfield (Lathrup) interact with each other?"
Well the first thing to look at is where does the students hang? Roger explained that there are certain halls in his school that they name by letters. However, I did find out that all of the Chaldeans in the school usually hang in the A-Hall. I asked him if there was any significance of the hall that they hang in being called the A-Hall. He assured me that the halls were named in alphabetical order, and they just happen to be in that one. There was no harm done.
Further along the conversation, Roger tells me that there are only twelve white students that attend his school. They rarely hang with each other. They sort of spread themselves among the crowd. There was no conflict anywhere. However, there was one exception. One of the Caucasian students (whose name cannot be revealed at this time) is constantly picked on. Students call him names such as "powder", "ghost", and "Casper". This student has even been beaten up by a group of students. "Is he picked on by a particular group of students?" I asked. Roger clarified that everyone picked on he student. "Why?" I inquired. When quoted Roger said, "because everybody thinks he's annoying and he looks funny. I try to be nice to him and give him a chance."
